Abstract

Purpose: This study aimed to examine the effects of dance/movement programs on self-esteem, depression, and anxiety in psychiatric inpatients.

Methods: The research design was a non-equivalent and non-synchronized control group design. For this research, a total of 43 subjects were selected at a psychiatric unit of C university hospital in U-city. The experimental group consisted of 20 subjects and they received a dance/movement program service 2 times per week for 5 weeks. The remaining 23 subjects were assigned to the control group and they received standard services without a dance/movement program. In data analysis the SPSS/WIN 14.0 program was used.

Results: The experimental group significantly improved compared to the control group in self-esteem and anxiety. However, in terms of depression, the experimental group showed greater improvement than the control group, but there was no statistical significance.

Conclusion: This study result suggests that dance/movement programs could improve self-esteem, depression, and anxiety in psychiatric inpatients
